Piedra Blanca Community
Eco-Tourism
The Community
Eco-Tourism Project at Piedra Blanca in Ecuador aims to provide a
sustainable
source of income and a powerful incentive to save the local rainforest
and
all
the
beautiful flowers, birds, animals and insects it supports.
The forest on
the steep slopes around and above
the tiny
village of Piedra Blanca is threatened by the extraction of
timber. But this
is an area of extreme poverty and logging is inevitable
if local people have no other source of
income.
Relax
in the ecolodge, take a guided walk
through
the lush forest, cool off in sparkling waterfalls, marvel at tiny
hummingbirds,
listen out for toucans and wander through clouds of
butterflies… Facilities
are very basic but this is the real thing - an
enjoyable and educational community eco tourism experience.
Eco-tourists
can take the
adventurous trek up to the Piedra Blanca ("white rock") itself, just
one of various possible treks through the virgin rainforest and valley
in the drier part of the year (June to December).
Walking tours and horseback rides are other ways to enjoy the
primary forest and mountain scenery.
