Evolution
Darwin's
Ghost: The Origin of Species Updated,
by Steve Jones. This
is a fascinating read, based on Darwin's "The
Origin of Species" but
including all the things we know now that Darwin could only guess at
then.
Well-written, fun to read and much easier going than the
original. (Published in the UK as 'Almost Like a Whale").
The
Beak of the Finch: A Story of Evolution in Our Time, by
Jonathan Weiner. An award-winning account
of astonishing research on Darwin's finches in
the Galapagos Islands, showing how evolution is happening much faster
than Darwin or anyone else had realised.
The
Origin of Species,
by Charles Darwin. This is the book that started
it all, a
must-read if you are
seriously
interested in evolution and the Galapagos Islands. It's a
fairly heavy-weight read but well worth wading through.
Life: An Unauthorized Biography, by
Richard
Fortey.
Going right back to the beginning, this is a
wonderfully
accessible account of how life on earth started, sprinkled with
anecdotes and sparkling with enthusiasm. If you thought
fossils
were boring, read this and think again.
